Radon In Homes

Radon in Air

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. When it occurs in elevated concentrations in the air we breathe, it poses a health risk. Radon is the most common cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. In Switzerland, 200-300 people die each year from lung cancer caused by radon. This is about the same number as traffic fatalities.

In Switzerland, a radon reference value of 300Bq/m3 applies (Radiation Protection Ordinance Art. 155). This value should not be exceeded as an annual average in rooms where people regularly spend several hours per day.

Our Services in Living

Radon normally enters a residential building from below. Heating and the higher humidity of the earth in winter favor high radon concentrations (image source BAG).

We recommend that organizations and institutions commission Econs Technology AG or another federally recognized radon measuring agency with the measurement.

Private people can easily and inexpensively determine the magnitude of the radon concentration in their own living area themselves. You will find numerous suppliers of radon dosimeters (passive detection samples for one-time use) and electronic measuring devices on the Internet. If you are overwhelmed by the diversity of the market offer, you will receive a short, free telephone consultation from our experts. If you need an officially recognized radon measurement, or if you do not want to carry out the measurement yourself for other reasons, we will be happy to carry it out for you.

If critical radon concentrations are measured or expected, we recommend a more detailed analysis. Our specialists have the necessary equipment, training and experience for this. The analysis will reveal under which conditions and through which pathways radon enters your living spaces. This knowledge is of great importance as a basis for remediation.

The approach to radon remediation is highly dependent on the radon entry pathways and the utilization and construction of the building. It may include structural measures and/or adjustments to the ventilation system. Our experts will show you options for action, provide advice and help you find an effective and cost-efficient solution. For implementation, we work together with construction companies of your choice or suggest companies with whom we already work successfully.
